The original concept for Know The Ledge occurred on the front porch of the Costello family home in Malden, MA in 2007. Originally, it was a t-shirt graphic and it was released a few months later. Eventually, it evolved into a series of video shorts, two of which have already been released with a third in the works. The statement is taken from the 1990’s hip hop classic “Juice (Know The Ledge)” by Eric B. and Rakim, which will go down in music history as having one of the best basslines of all time, sampled from Nat Adderley’s “Rise, Sally Rise”. As Rakim’s storytelling on the track unfolds, anyone that listens to it realizes that knowing the ledge is about knowing one’s limitations and, overall, to be knowledgeable of one’s surroundings.
In skateboarding, some people have less limitations embedded in their thought processes, which is what makes them great. To know the ledge as a skateboarder is to be comfortable with an ever-growing repertoire of tricks. When Homage Brooklyn approached us about making Know The Ledge into a contest that is centered strictly around ledge tricks, it made perfect sense. Although it is only one aspect of skateboarding, it’s clearly what we were referring to back in 2007, and it’s great to be a part of such an event.
