Travis Rice Mentors Inner City Youth

29 March 2012, 19.54 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Travis Rice mentored a bunch of kids in Stoked Snow Mentor program last Sunday at Snow Summit. As soon as he was introduced, he jumped right in with no coaching and basically set the bar for mentoring. It was awesome. He even led a snowball fight at the end. Check out this video from the day. Many thanks to Travis for being such an inspiration for kids and adults.

Insomnia is a Mutha…

27 February 2012, 12.20 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Insomnia. Word. It’s a big problem.

What do you when you CANNOT sleep because you’re stressed the hell out, wondering what your next move in life is?

You BOUNCE on the next flight to Whistler!

That’s Exactly what I did 7 years ago.

It was my First time out west.

First time seeing HUUUGGE mountains!

CLEAN air. GREEN Trees. BLUE Skies.

I was like a kid from the city who left their hood for the first time. Wait, I WAS THAT kid!

I got so STOKED that I realized THIS is the only thing I wanted to do. Snowboard. I had to figure out how to make it a part of my life.

You ever get SOOO open on a SHRED trip that you think you’re unstoppable?

You say, “I’m going to switch things up when I get back home…”

Watch the edit to see what I did after my trip.

Why I Love Snowboarding

25 January 2012, 09.36 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

I’m heading to Aspen in a few days so I’m getting motivated by watching some snowboard videos. I came across this from a friend and reminded me among other things, about the lifestyle that costs too much, takes too much time to do, hurts you, loves you, inspires you, and is so much fun. Enjoy!

This week’s “Who I’m Stoked On” is a my friend Alekesam. He’s a multi-talented performer and I’m excited about his self titled album. This is the first track “It’s Not You, It’s Here.” This song is on rotation at KCRW in LA and played on an episode on Entourage. I’m feeling this song. Let me know what you think.

ASkate.org has a campaign with the Pepsi Refresh Project to win a 50K grant. If you don’t know, ASkate.org works with youth who have autism and teaches them how to skateboard. This grant will enable them to expand to serve many more youth nationally. Do yourself and the tons of young people with autism a favor and vote for ASkate.org. Who knows you may even win a trip to Los Angeles for it.

What I’m Stoked On: MUNDAKA 24H

20 September 2011, 16.07 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Here’s a new post series called What/Who I’m Stoked On. I simply put up pictures and videos of things and people that get me, well, Stoked.

What: Some clip a friend of mine put me on to. It’s Aritz Aranburu surfing Mundaka.

Why: Because LED surfboards make for great visuals and makes surfing at night entirely feasible.

For the past three summers, Stoked has partnered with Nike to create really rad experiences for our youth. This year, we created the Summer of Stoked. This program supports swimming lessons, a surf mentoring piece, a skateboard building program, and an action sports photography program in NYC & LA. Here is a clip of some of our kids at the Nike US Open of Surfing event last week.

Stoked’s Surfing Season in Full Swing

10 August 2011, 19.36 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Six years ago, I was just launching our surfing program for New York City teens in Rockaway Beach through my organization Stoked. The idea was simple… well at least I thought it was. I wanted to take kids and mentors surfing in NYC. I managed to hustle six surfboards from Quiksilver and I was able to take six kids surfing along with a handful of volunteer mentors. Beach 90 in Rockaway was empty! In 2005, they just made it legal to surf in NYC, so it wasn’t as popular as it is today. Little did I know that we were the first non-profit to take kids surfing in NYC. A few years later, Stoked was instrumental in opening the second surf break at Beach 67. Today, with the help of Nike, we’re taking over 150 youth surfing in NYC and around 40 youth in Los Angeles this summer. Needless to say I’m stoked!  The line up in Rockaway and the beaches of Los Angeles have never looked so diverse. I just like to think we’re democratizing action sports a bit.

Check out more pics from our NYC and LA programs after the jump.
