Die Antwoord

30 January 2010, 23.36 | Posted in Uncategorized | 2 comments »

Straight out of the South African hood, Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek are Die Antwoord. And they got some kind of crazy ISH going on. Is this real? Are they for real? Oh, fo’ sho. Draw your own conclusions, but I definitely wanna cop a pair of those Dark Side of The Moon shorts.

As Zep rap-rave master Ninja says about their crew, “Well DJ Hi Tek makes, like … he owns a PC computer. K, he makes like next level beats. And basically, I got some serious, like, gangsta skill, you know on the mark.”

Grand Theft Auto. I feel like I’m 14 again. Jesus. I downloaded the Chinatown version on my iPhone, and I’ve been doing all I can to keep myself away from the lure of stealing cars and shooting me up some thug motherfuckers. At least now I understand why 8 to 18-year-olds are spending 7 hours a day (53 hours a week) consuming entertainment media, according to this recent Kaiser Family study.  But shit, when you can go around hustling people trading pounds of weed and kilos of coke, I guess that beats homework. Or in my case, getting any work done. God help us.

Haiti Benefit Parties: A Good Trend

30 January 2010, 22.03 | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment »

Nice to see the overwhelming number of Haiti Benefits that have been happening. While officials are fighting over where Haitians can be transported for care, and news about Haiti sinks below page one, it’s cool to see those outside of governmental roles or aid organizations contributing and keeping the help coming, even if in a small way — a trend that for once is borne from a good cause. Though if you share the opinion of former NBA player Paul Shirley, you probably wouldn’t agree.

Tron Legacy

30 January 2010, 21.23 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

Holy shit. Tron 2.0 is here. Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, who has been living in the programming world for 25 years, after breaking through and getting trapped in that  digitized world he found himself in the original movie.

In “Legacy” Flynn’s son searches for his lost father and winds up in the same cyber reality. But really, the premise of the film isn’t the appeal of the movie whereas the visuals are: a futuristic cyber sci-fi land that earned Tron its cult following. Back in 1982, Tron was on the vanguard of movies using computer generated graphics and now the new version, which reportedly will be shown in 3-D and IMAX 3-D only, seems to follow suit.

To complement it all? Daft Punk is composing the score. Break out those hallucinogens, yo.

Alex Prager | Week-end

"Wendy" by Alex Prager

"Wendy" by Alex Prager

A new exhibition by photographer Alex Prager is up at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in Chelsea. I’m a huge fan of her work and can easily get lost in her dreamy, cinematic, and carefully constructed imagery. This latest body of work is entitled “Week-end,” and it marks her third installment in a trilogy of staged female portraits. Using Los Angeles as her backdrop, Prager describes the city as “a strange picture of perfection … with a sense of of unease under the surface of all this beauty and promise.” A statement that seems to characterize her style of work as well.

I’ve had the privilege to work with Prager on a couple of projects through our mutual involvement in WeSC, a brand that she has long been associated with — and man, the girl is so damn talented. Oh, she’s super hot too. (Is that inappropriate? Fuck it!) If you’re in New York, the show runs through Feb. 20. If you’re on the West Coast, the same show will open in LA at the M + B Gallery beginning Jan. 30. Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.

Check a couple more images from the Week-end series after the jump, or see the entire collection on her website.
