starks burton hail boot A Closer Look: Burton x Starks Hail
We brought you the exclusive first look at the Burton x Starks Hail boot back at SIA in January. The boot has been updated since the sample we previewed and has just dropped at Burton flagships and select retailers. We caught up with Alex Dymond, who designed the boot, for a little background behind the collab. Read the interview after the jump.

RC: How did the boot collabo come together in the first place?

AD: I have been snowboarding forever and it made sense to jump on snowboard boots since laces often get shredded while resting your board on the lift. Plus Burton is a company I’ve been riding since 1993, and is by far one of the most classic, iconic, and progressive snowboard companies out there. With Starks we only work with companies that we respect. All of these reasons made for a perfect match.

Did you have the Hail in mind already?

No, that was Burton’s choice, but it was a great model, so it made complete sense.

The hunting motif isn’t new to snowboarding but you for sure refined it with this boot, was that the goal?

Yeah we love hunting garments, brands like Filson and such, were an inspiration for sure. Tree camo is a great DPM for snowboarding as its not military related, which works since you are in the hills and forest. Poach the slopes…

How is the boot design process different or similar to sneaker design?

Well I think they are much more similar then different. I suppose the main difference is that no matter what, snowboard boots are big and clunky so you have to make sure every little detail is dialed and they are looking proper. Some of the other concepts that we had mocked up and sampled but never released, were based off some of our favorite sneakers in fact.

What about the boot are you most stoked on?

The tree camo and quilted stitch combo and also the Starks/Burton laces of course!
