A Day In Austria: Nike Chosen Sessions

01 May 2012, 07.15 | Posted in Photography, Travel | 2 comments »

austria header

There are a lot of people who tell me how nice it must be to have a job that allows me to travel so much. I will admit, the travel is definitely is a perk… but it is still a job. As the online editor for Snowboarder Magazine, I bounce from mountain to mountain covering snowboarding… but the thing is, the snow looks the same in Colorado as it does Austria, Chile, Japan, or any other far off ski destination. What I am saying is that if I didn’t make a point to get out and explore, then everywhere I traveled for work would all feel the same… a hotel room, a mountain, some form of trees, snow, and snowboarders throwing themselves off features. When I went to Austria I didn’t want it to just fall into that routine.

You Have Got To Be Kidding: iPhone Rangefinder

29 February 2012, 22.19 | Posted in Photography, Product, You Have Got to Be Kidding | No comments »

I used to be opposed to “iPhone Photography” before I actually owned an iPhone. I thought it made the whole photo process from shooting, to editing, to sharing way too easy. Now I am a fan, mainly because of Instagram… it is addicting. But recently while scrolling through my Tumblr I stumbled upon this iPhone Rangefinder case. I hate to hate… but there is a certain point where you should just give in and buy an actual camera. If you need to spend $100 on a case to make your phone look like an old school camera, that is a bit over the top.

New Year: New Road Trip

13 February 2012, 09.56 | Posted in Photography, Travel | 1 comment »

This past new years my friend Jared and I decided to do things a little differently, we set out on a five-day road trip from Salt Lake City, UT to Big Sur, CA. Along the way Jared had to shoot a video for this clothing company, SLVDR, so we made frequent stops at anything that looked remotely interesting. Which was perfect for me because while he was doing his thing, I wandered off with my camera glued to my eyeball. Making only one overnight stop in San Francisco, we spent the rest of the nights in a cabin at Big Sur. Besides coming down with food poisoning on New Years Eve, which put us both down for the count that night… it was a pretty amazing trip, Big Sur had been on my list of places to go for quite a while.

Check out my photos and Jared’s video after the jump… they will tell the rest of the story.

Jeff Harris: 4,748 Self-Portraits & Counting

18 January 2012, 21.04 | Posted in Photography, Video | 1 comment »

I’m surprised I am just now stumbling upon Jeff Harris’ work. What started as a New Year’s Resolution of writing in a journal, turned into shooting a photo of himself everyday with a Olympus Stylus 35mm film camera… a visual journal if you will. Pretty amazing way to force you to do something interesting everyday and get creative with the photos you take. Jeff is an inspiration not only as a photographer, but as a human. Portland Halloween 2011 03 2 Whiskey infused wiener. Cory Grove.

I think if your average joe ventured into Portland on any ol’ day they would look around and think it was Halloween…. so you can only imagine what it’s like on actual Halloween weekend. I made my way up there this year to check it out for myself and walked away with a few photos from the night. See the rest after the jump.

Blotto Poster

My long time homie and all around awesome guy, Dean Blotto Gray, otherwise known as just straight “Blotto” has a show coming up in Burlington, VT on September 9th as part of the annual Art Hop… so if you are in the area I highly recommend checking it out. It will be located in the new hot spot on the bottom floor of JDK studios called “Maglianero Cafe“. As a senior photographer at Burton Snowboards, Blotto is best known for his shots from the snow world, but this show “Derailleur The Conventional” will be showcasing some amazing cycling shots. Don’t sleep on this, check it out… I would if I could.

My Photo’s On A Surfboard: Piety

Piety Laura Austin 5

A while back I had an art show in Costa Mesa which one of my old co-workers at Quiksilver, Beau Irvine, happened to show up to. He came across one of my photos and asked if I would be willing to contribute it to an art project he was working on. Under the name Piety, Beau is collaborating with his artistic friends to make a series of one-of-a-kind surfboards, building the boards himself. I was more than happy to pass along one of my photos and recently I found a surprise in my inbox containing these photos of the finished board. Couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. From afar it just appears to be stripes of colors, but as you get closer you realize it is a beach scene with a lifeguard tower… a picture I took a few years back in Newport Beach, CA. Beau now has this board he called “The Livin’ Easy” displayed at Bear Flag Fish Co… home of the best fish taco I have ever had, located in the same location the photo was taken, Newport Beach.

To see more info on this board specifically and the rest of the boards Beau has been working on check out the Piety website.

Manfrotto: An Evening To Imagine More

26 April 2011, 19.59 | Posted in Party, Photography | No comments »

I’m going to try to make a long story as short as possible. A few weeks ago I got a call from a marketing company asking me to be a part of an event in New York City hosted by a leading company in camera, video, and lighting accessories, Manfrotto. As soon as I heard the date of the event, May 11th, I quickly realized that there was no way I could be apart of it seeing that it was the exact same time as SNOWBOARDER Magazine’s Superpark, our biggest event of the year. However, once I learned a little more about the Manfrotto deal, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. More info about the event after the jump.
