Party in NY, Art Opening in LA

02 June 2011, 21.21 | Posted in Uncategorized | No comments »

If you’re in NYC today, come have some cold ones and kick it with the Swedes at WeSC Soho, 282 Lafayette @ Prince. Looptroop Rockers will be doing a special in-store DJ set from 6-8 before their big blowout tonight at Hudson Terrace.

If you’re in LA, come out for WeSC artist Vanessa Prager’s opening show tonight “Across the Universe,” hosted by Danny Masterson. ADBD gallery, 8246 Beverly Blvd, 7-10. — she has a lot planned, all kinds of installations and other surprises, so stop by, say hi, maybe pick up a piece of her work while it’s still affordable.

I’ll be at the NYC jawn. See ya’ there.

Brooklyn Banks Jungle

http://www.vimeo.com/9184909

My friend Cecile filmed this 16 mm short a couple weeks ago at a Save The Banks gathering — officially the “last day” before the historic skate area closed. It’s a quick but poignant clip with a rough and tough feel fitting of the Banks. No music, no audio.

Cameos from all the homies — Michael Cohen, Shawn Powers, Heron Preston, Dick’s Nuts the French Chihuahua, Emilie Kareh, and crew.

As for the latest update on closure of the banks the Downtown Express, “The Newspaper of Lower Manhattan,” reported the closure was initially slated for Jan. 15 but it didn’t happen. Steve Rodriguez, owner of 5boro Skateboards isn’t sure what the final date will be when there will no longer be access.

But it’s coming. Any day now. Though the Banks are anticipated to reopen in 2014, it’s a tough hit for New York skateboarding.

Alex Prager | Week-end

"Wendy" by Alex Prager

"Wendy" by Alex Prager

A new exhibition by photographer Alex Prager is up at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in Chelsea. I’m a huge fan of her work and can easily get lost in her dreamy, cinematic, and carefully constructed imagery. This latest body of work is entitled “Week-end,” and it marks her third installment in a trilogy of staged female portraits. Using Los Angeles as her backdrop, Prager describes the city as “a strange picture of perfection … with a sense of of unease under the surface of all this beauty and promise.” A statement that seems to characterize her style of work as well.

I’ve had the privilege to work with Prager on a couple of projects through our mutual involvement in WeSC, a brand that she has long been associated with — and man, the girl is so damn talented. Oh, she’s super hot too. (Is that inappropriate? Fuck it!) If you’re in New York, the show runs through Feb. 20. If you’re on the West Coast, the same show will open in LA at the M + B Gallery beginning Jan. 30. Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.

Check a couple more images from the Week-end series after the jump, or see the entire collection on her website.
