Why We Shred: Damien Hobgood

Our never not grinding columnist Deka Paupaw just went on a trip to Haiti for an upcoming documentary project he’s working on for the Global Empowerment Project where he ran into none other than surf legend Damien Hobgood who was on the island to set up water filtration with Waves for Water. Our global wave chaser and lifetime Bed Stuy representative Brian Deka Paupaw has brought us another installment of his series on Brasilian hip hop with an interview with rising Rio de Janeiro artist Akira Presidente. Besides having a dope name and working alongside Brasilian super MC Marcelo D2 (video after the jump), Akira makes hip hop in the tradition of Big, Jay Z, Nas, Big L, Wu tang, J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop, Planet Hemp, and Racionais Mc’s. As part of his coverage of the event, which was also the 60th birthday for O’Neill, Deka interviewed pro surfer Jordy Smith for his ongoing “Why We Shred” interview series. Hoods to Woods x Life + Times

Earlier this summer, Radcollector columnist Brian Deka Paupaw’s Hood to Woods Foundation got together with Trouble Andrew and Santigold to help re-open the Open Road Park in NYC’s LES. Hoods to Woods Granted 501(c)(3) Status

In some great news for the day, the Brooklyn youth organization Hoods to Woods was granted 501(c)(3) non profit status this week. Founded by artist/designer/shredder and Radcollector columnist Brian Deka Paupaw in 2009 after a global shred journey showed him that being on a board can change lives, Hoods to Woods gives kids specifically from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn the opportunity to experience another world through skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding. With the northern hemi snowboard season officially upon us, columnist Deka had the rad idea to compile stories, photos, videos, or anything at all from our readers that tell us why they shred. So we’re going to do exactly that. Send anything you got to Deka at [email protected] and he’ll post the raddest entry each day for the month of December.
